Default I was duped! - INFILTRATION IN THE RANKS!!!!

INFILTRATION IN THE RANKS!!!!

I was duped! A recent member asked to be an officer - as he said he had lots of friends to invite - me being the trusting sort I of course said yes...

1 minute later all of our members were kicked!!!

And a nasty message was put out as a guild annoucment - saying 'MY GUILD THE ***** OF ** IS #1, GOT YOU, U NEWBS!'

(Name left out - as him and his guild really dont need the publicity, all I will say is that I have done a search on here and a member of the same guild posts here)

We had about 20 members in all, which were all pretty active - 4 of those are officers (and weren't kicked, thank goodness) - I have of course re-inveted everyone back, but what a pain!

Of course this was partly my fault for being so trusting - but it has made it hard for me to trust anyone else now except my current officers.

Just thought everyone should be aware of this little 'joke'

Never make anybody an officer until you find out what kind of player they are. If they've got a lot of friends they want to invite just ask them for their names. As a leader, the first question a member will ask me when they join is if they can be officer and will try to list the reasons why. One person tried to tell me they helped pay for the guild hall when I bought it myself... A few other reasons why was that they're experienced (As a level 11 in Lion's Arch), active (member was hardly on), and will try to convince me by mispelling every word they type. I don't really see the appeal of being an officer. You have to recruit which isn't that fun, you're expected to help out a lot, and your only power outside of recruiting is starting GvGs and promoting other officers. Not much power in that.

Yup I agree with all your points, like I say it was partly my fault for being trusting (and lazy) I really didn't want to sit there inviting 'all' these guys he had, him telling me and me re-typing. But all our other officers are like you say friends that I have played with for a while - I took a chance and got burned...never again.

I've gotten the immediate "Can I be an officer" after invites. My usuall answer is either I need to get to know you first or "Officer promotions aren't until next month, sorry you just missed it!"

Usually the people who ask this right away don't end up staying long anyway.

I lead my guild, my advice....I would let your members go for a while, play with them for a while, get to know them. The ones that you feel comfortable with. But if someone says can I be an officer, and they see that you already have 5....its not a good sign.

can an officer kick out the guild leader? if not, then becoming an officer and booting the other guild members/officers would be kind of pointless, as the guild leader would just log in, kick the offending officer, and then reinvite all the regular members.

If anyone asks that he can become guild officer, well, thats the time guild leaders should realise thats not the person for the job.

That is exactly what happened in this case - it is more of a pain than a hindrence - I am sure all the members in the guild that were active will re-join, and as soon as the offending officer pulled the prank - he of course left the guild anyway.

You could always set everyone as an officer. That way only the leader can kick "members".

Same thing happened to my guild before, their reason for doing such thing?
He told that anet sent secret message to him to kick out everybody and after 20 min, anet will invite everybody back to the guild. He even asked me to donate 100k so that he can bribe our guild leader to make me the leader of the guild.
We were lucky to get everybody back yet it was costly since we had 55 active members.
Sometimes those jerks stay in the guild for few days and ask you to promote them, so be careful.

I got to be an officer after 5 month. I never even cared about being one. I was made one because i was more active than the others and i could handle some invites.

IMO unless you are in a roleplaying guild, ranks inside the guild should have no meaning, it should be a utility like stuff to be an officer.

That realy sucks mate!

Glad you're getting it sorted though. In our Guild, there are only two ways of becoming officer...
a) we know you in real life, so you'd be a fool to mess us around!
b) all officers have put in a vote for a member to become an officer, that way, you have to impress all the officers, which, may I add, is fairly difficult that way, they've been in the Guild long enough for you to know they aren't going to screw you over!

Hope this doesn't happen to you again! And better luck this time!

Live and learn.

Never make an officer of someone you dont know.

Hell....I have a friend ive known for months that i wont allow into my guild (he's guildless) because i know his personality and he might disrupt the guild. This is a VERY good friend of mine and i wont even let him be a member.

I never could understand those that I saw spamming about a guild and how the first so many were auto officers... I always thought this to be a huge risk.

Most of our guild is made up of friends, and friends of friends.

We picked up a real nice guy named Sam from this message board the other day cause he liked the way we did things.
besides random promotions and demotions (we are big about having fun) that are never permanant - we only TRULY promote those that have put forth the effort by helping others in the guild, being selfless, and easy to talk to. They must be able to take charge in mine or my husbands stead.

We are actually going to go meet some of them in real life this summer for lunch! We are a family and we all trust each other.

ooh I seem to recall an invite not to long ago that asked for promoting so he could invite a friend and I told him no.... It always sends up red flags for me when they do that ;_;
So sorry that happened to ya hun! I hope no one else falls victim to this - thanks for the warning!

I've been in the guild I am in for about 3 weeks now, maybe a month... yesterady, the leader gave me leader temporarially so I could run to Cavalon and get the Luxon Faction Dudes in our guild hall for him.

I flat out asked him if he could do it and after about 2 seconds of thought, he gave it to me.

Our guild has roughly 100 people in it, and it's a division in a larger clan of over 1,000 people from other games.

Just contributing...

Since only offiers can communicate in alliance chat I expect either only officers will be dong the 12v12 or all members will end up becoming officers in order to communicate on the battlefield.

No. Only the leader can kick officers. Officers can only kick regular members, which can be quite damaging enough.

There needs to be a tier level for officers.
